Do you have a smile concern? If your teeth aren't quite as perfect as you'd like, a cosmetic dentistry treatment may give your smile the cosmetic dentistryboost it needs. Our Wheat Ridge, CO, dentist, Dr. John Wyatt, discusses several types of treatments that can renew or restore your smile.

Tooth-colored fillings

Everyone used to know when you visited the dentist, thanks to your brand new silver filling. Today, fillings are tooth-colored, allowing them to blend in with your natural tooth color. Tooth-colored fillings are made of composite resin, a flexible material that's tinted to match common tooth shades. After the material is placed in your tooth, it's hardened with a curing light in our Wheat Ridge office. Tooth-colored fillings are not only more attractive but also strengthen your teeth. Unlike the old silver amalgam fillings, they don't contract or expand when exposed to hot or cold temperatures, which reduces the risk that your tooth will crack eventually.

Bonding

Whether you have a chipped tooth or want to make an oddly shaped tooth look just like your other teeth, bonding provides a simple, inexpensive solution. During the treatment, a flexible composite resin is applied to your teeth, then molded and shaped to achieve the desired effect. Exposing the composite resin material to a curing light hardens it, ensuring that it's tough enough to stand up to wear and tear.

Veneers

Veneers are an excellent option if your teeth have flaws that are only visible on the front surfaces. Thin porcelain shells are created from impressions of your mouth and applied with dental cement to the fronts of teeth. You may be interested in veneers if you have a discolored or oddly shaped teeth or want to hide chips, cracks or other imperfections. Veneers can also eliminate slight gaps between teeth and lengthen them.

Dental implants

Replacing your entire missing tooth is possible with dental implants. During the implant process, a titanium post will be placed in your jawbone to replace your missing root. After the post bonds to your jawbone, it's connected to a crown, an artificial tooth that closely resembles your missing tooth. Because your replacement root actually fuses to your jawbone, you can expect your implant to remain strong and healthy for your entire life as long as you practice good oral hygiene.

Can you enhance a smile flawed by chips, stains, gaps and other small defects? Is a bright, even smile truly achievable? Why not ask Dr.Veneers John Wyatt, your dentist serving the Wheat Ridge and Arvada, CO area, if porcelain veneers could help the appearance of your teeth? He'll tell you all about this popular cosmetic treatment and if they can beautify your healthy smile.

Sometimes whitening and bonding aren't enough

That's when porcelain veneers may come in. Also termed dental laminates, porcelain veneers are tooth-shaped shells of quality dental ceramic. Tooth-colored, lustrous and realistic, veneers cover the front side of teeth that are chipped, cracked, discolored or misshapen. Dr. Wyatt bonds veneers in place permanently and with routine care, they last for 10 to 15 years, or in some cases, even longer.

Placement of veneers helps defects and stains that are just too big or dark for composite resin bonding or professional teeth whitening. Dr. Wyatt determines which cosmetic dental treatment will work best by examining the individual's teeth and gums and taking X-rays. Then, he makes recommendations based on the patient's oral health, budget, and desired goals. Often, cosmetic dentists use porcelain veneers combined with whitening, bonding, tooth-colored fillings and other aesthetic services to completely transform a less than perfect smile.

What's the process like?

After deciding to place veneers, the dentist in Wheat Ridge takes oral impressions and removes a thin slice of enamel from the front of each tooth receiving a veneer. This buffing procedure is quick and comfortable and helps laminates bond securely in place. Dr. Wyatt also takes oral impressions and sends them, together with his treatment plan, to a dental lab for custom fabrication of the veneers. In the meantime, the patient wears temporary laminates.

When the new veneers are ready, Dr. Wyatt removes the temporary ones and uses a special cement to bond the veneers to each tooth. The ceramist carefully sculpted the veneers to the right shape and size to compliment the individual's smile and other facial features, and frankly, the resulting transformation is amazing. Veneers allow the patient to have a beautiful and very natural-looking smile that resists stains and chips.

Additionally, caring for porcelain veneers is as easy as brushing twice a day with a soft brush and flossing daily as the American Dental Association advises. While veneers are strong, it's wise to avoid chewing ice cubes, peanut brittle or other hard and sticky foods.

Cosmetic Dentistry in Wheat Ridge and Arvada, CO

  • Orthodontics: Orthodontic treatment focuses on straightening your smile and correcting overcrowding and under crowding issues while also correcting problems with the bite like overbite, underbite, or crossbite. Orthodontics are a tried and true method to renew your look and give you a smile you love.
  • Teeth Whitening: After undergoing orthodontic treatment, you may wish to further improve your look with teeth whitening. While at-home kits work to lift the color of the teeth, they require weeks or even months of continued use before providing the same results as a professional teeth whitening session. Professional teeth whitening, available right at your dentist’s office, can lift the color of your teeth dramatically in just an hour-long appointment.
  • Dental Implants: Dental implants further improve your smile by permanently replacing your missing teeth. This not only fills in your gaps to complete your smile, it stimulates the bone underneath your gap to prevent complications like bone atrophy and its side effects. Dental implants are often regarded as the most effective tooth replacement option available.
  • Dental Bonding: Dental bonding is a quick, easy procedure which repairs simple imperfections in your teeth like small chips, uneven lengths, or misshapen teeth. Alongside these other cosmetic treatments, dental bonding can put the finishing touches on your smile to perfect your new look.
  • Sealants: Dental sealants, while not necessarily a cosmetic dentistry treatment, will work towards preventing tooth decay. After undergoing these other treatments, it is important to keep your smile as healthy as possible. Sealants are a thin plastic coating placed over the biting surface of the molars to fill in the deep grooves which naturally occur in the tooth. This helps even out the biting surface to ensure that food particles and bacteria can be easily removed with brushing and flossing and do not become trapped within the tooth.

Traditionally associated with aging, periodontal (gum) disease is also a problem among younger adults. According to the Centers for periodontal diseaseDisease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 47% of American adults over the age of 30 suffer from some form of gum disease, which has three stages ranging from mild to advanced. Dr. John Wyatt, a dentist serving the Wheat Ridge and Arvada, CO area, recommends practicing prevention by maintaining a good daily oral hygiene routine at home and scheduling regular oral checkups and dental cleanings to help prevent gum disease and maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Protect Your Teeth from Gum Disease in Wheat Ridge and Arvada, CO

Gingivitis is the mildest and earliest form of gum disease. The most common symptoms are red, swollen, tender and bleeding gums. At this stage, your dentist can typically reverse the damage with a dental cleaning. With daily brushing and flossing, gingivitis does not have to progress to the next phase, periodontitis. Advanced periodontitis is the last and most aggressive form of gum disease, which can result in tooth loss and serious gum inflammation and infections.

In addition to bleeding, the following symptoms are common signs of gum disease:

  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Pus between the teeth or gums
  • New gaps and spacing between the teeth
  • Noticeable changes to your bite pattern

How is Gum Disease Prevented and Treated?

The most effective way to protect your teeth and gums is to brush and floss daily and to see your dentist once to twice a year for a checkup and cleaning. Limiting sugary food and drinks and avoiding smoking are also important for your oral health. Gum disease can also be hereditary, making some people more susceptible than others. Deep cleaning procedures like root planing and scaling can help to remove plaque and tartar buildup between the teeth and under the gums.

While most individuals are aware of the impact smoking has on their overall health, some may not be aware of its effects on their smile. smokingDr. John A. Wyatt in Wheat Ridge, CO offers a full range of dental services.Read on to learn about the effects of smoking on your teeth.

Stained Teeth

If you smoke, your teeth will darken over time. Smoking is a common cause of tooth discoloration and can turn the teeth black, brown, or yellow. Chewing tobacco also contributes to yellowing of the teeth. If you smoke or use tobacco products, consider cutting back or quitting altogether.

Plaque Buildup

Smoking can cause plaque buildup on your teeth. Eventually, plaque hardens into tartar, a hard layer that forms between the teeth and around the gums. The buildup of plaque and tartar on your teeth can lead to decay and gum disease. The only way to remove tartar is to see a dentist for a dental cleaning.

Tooth Decay

Smoking increases the risk of tooth decay. If you're a smoker, visit your Wheat Ridge, CO, dentist regularly, so early decay can be treated as soon as possible. Tooth decay is much easier to treat in its early stages. If not treated, tooth decay can cause infection, pain and tooth loss.

Tooth Loss

Smokers are about twice as likely to lose their teeth as non-smokers. Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for periodontitis. Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease. If not treated, the teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed.

If regular dental checkups haven't been one of your top priorities for the last few years, they should be. Going to the dentist is important at any age. Call Dr. John A. Wyatt in Wheat Ridge, CO at 303-421-0600 today to schedule your dental appointment. Regular visits to a dentist will get you on the road to good oral health.
